Three important events have shaped the town of Gulgong since its inception in 1870:
- The discovery of gold on Red Hill by Tom Saunders in 1870.
- The presence of Henry Lawson, our most famous poet, whose mother came from near Gulgong and who lived here during the gold rush period. Henry’s father built a house in Gulgong which has been restored and still stands in Medley Street.
- The Governor Outbreak in 1900 when Jimmy governor and his brother Joe, the last of the bushrangers, murdered nine people and for ninety days were the subject of the largest manhunt in Australian history.
Bob has made a DVD, with the late James Loneragan, on the gold discovery in Gulgong that features an interview with the acknowledged local expert on gold, Hilary Hughes.
Bob is a devotee and performer of Henry Lawson material and has recorded a CD of Henry Lawson material, Freedom on the Wallaby features four songs, a story and nine poems. All tracks have a musical accompaniment.
Recently Bob has written and performed a radio program on the Governor Outbreak which includes a number of his own songs.
